The Trap Expert

Practical Authority A life in dangerous tunnels Darktan leads the Trap Disposal Squad, relying on patience, tools, and experience rather than Hamnpork’s physical dominance. A different kind of expertise His maps and safety drills show how the Clan’s new intelligence can serve collective survival.

The First Fatal Trap

Fresh’s Death Lessons in caution Fresh dies in an unfamiliar trap, proving that the town’s tunnels are far more dangerous than ordinary rat runs. Responsibility under pressure Darktan must halt the expedition and contain fear while his team confronts unfamiliar poisons and devices.

A Leader’s Decision

Courage and Restraint Risk to stop cruelty Darktan devises a rescue using elastic cord and puts himself in danger to interrupt the rat-pit spectacle. An abandoned fire Although he considers setting the stable alight, he lets the match go out rather than endanger everyone inside.

Survival in the Trap

A Second Mouse’s Lesson Nourishing takes action Darktan is caught in an ancient Breakback trap, and Nourishing frees him by chewing through its weakened spring. A changed outlook Near death, Darktan recognizes that the Clan needs Dangerous Beans’s ideas as much as it needs practical skill.

From Fighter to Negotiator

A More Difficult Office Succession under strain After Hamnpork dies, Darktan must hold the Clan together and guide its response to the surviving threats. Leadership beyond shouting He eventually negotiates with the mayor, learning that ruling requires restraint, compromise, and listening as well as courage.
